Pawar bats for GM crops to meet food security
Wed, Feb 17 06:25 PM
New Delhi, Feb 17 (IANS) Strongly arguing for the genetically modified crops, which he said could solve the country's food security problem, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar Wednesday asked scientists to double efforts to remove all misgivings about GM crops from the minds of policy-makers and the public.
'We have to improve our productivity in a situation when the population doubles and there is no possibility of additional land and water,' Pawar said.
He, however, said the final decision on this issue could only be taken by the environment ministry.
Inaugurating the two-day conference of vice-chancellors of agricultural universities and meeting of directors of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) here, Pawar said: 'The recent decision on Bt Brinjal should not be seen as a setback to our efforts, but a challenge which we need to surmount.'
In a strongest possible defence of genetically modified crops, Pawar took a position diametrically opposite to Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, who put a moratorium on commercial release of Bt Brinjal pending more tests.
'Conventional technologies of agriculture are inadequate to meet the formidable challenges. The most compelling case for bio-technology, and more specifically transgenic crops, is their capability to increase crop productivity, lower production costs, conserve bio-diversity, efficient use of external inputs, and improvement of economic and social benefits and alleviation of abject poverty in poor and developing countries,' the minister said.
Later, talking to reporters the minister said genetically modified crops could solve the country's food security problem. However, he said, 'We will respect the decision taken by the environment ministry, which can give us the ultimate guidance.'
He said he wanted to 'resolve the issue of food security of the country.'

India Govt. puts Bt.Brinjal in deep freeze.

Citing a lack of scientific consensus and the absence of any “over-riding urgency”, the government today put an indefinite “moratorium” on the introduction of a genetically-modified brinjal developed after ten years of research, which was cleared by India’s apex technical committee three months ago.
Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, who took the decision, questioned the logic of letting private companies drive biotechnology research in agriculture. The brinjal in question has been developed by Mahyco — a private firm in which global seed major Monsanto holds a 26% stake — in collaboration with two Indian agricultural universities.
“We cannot depend on private sector to drive the biotechnology research in our agriculture sector. I think research in seeds is as strategic as space or nuclear research. I am therefore a firm believer in the strong involvement of public sector research in agriculture sector,” Ramesh told reporters.

Sangh Parivar's Latest Fake Propaganda Failed !
This post can be treated as a continuation of my previous post 'Sangh Parivar's Latest Flawed & Fake Propaganda - Love Jihad !'. (Those who didn't read it can go through it.)
Today (Wednesday, November 11, 2009) Director General of Police Jacob Punnose handed over his investigation report on ‘Love Jihad’ in Kerala High Court.
The report rules out the existence of any such organisation that has been engaged in forceful religious conversion. In short, there exists no evidence to support the alleged activities claimed by various Hindutva forces.
In his interim report, the DGP had stated that there was no evidence of any organisation called ‘Love Jihad’ or ‘Romeo Jihad’ undertaking forced conversions.
Things to be noted :
1. Where is the so called evidences those Hindutva forces have with them ? (They claimed over 4000 such missing reports with in 3 years!)
2. Why there is no much publicity over mass media for today's news ? (Alleged news was the 'Breaking News' of most media!)
3. Why no one yet said sorry (including those who made these fake news & media who made it so popular!) for trying to defame a religion, it's spiritual word & tried to sow the seeds of hatred ?
Note : The Gujarat Chief minister can't yet say sorry for the deliberate act of genocide in his state !

Sangh Parivar's Latest Flawed & Fake Propaganda - Love Jihad !
Certain Hindutva forces like Sangh Parivar, BJP, RSS, Sree Ram Sena, HAV, VHP etc and some community leaders have been spreading a fake , flawed and false propaganda in the name of Love against Islam and Muslims in the south Indian states particularly in Karnataka and Kerala. The grand father leaders of their organisation first coined the illogical and strange name 'Love Jihad' after a shocking incident in Karnataka. But after the truth behind the incident came out in light they kept mum there in Karnataka. The incident actually peeled off their skin and showed to us what they really are and what their real motives are!

10th Year of Hungerstrike: Call for Action in Support of Irom sharmila
(Mathrubhumi, 01 Nov 2009 ഞായറാഴ്ച)
Dear Friends,
On 2 November 2009, Manipur poet and activist Irom Sharmila, will enter the 10th year of her hunger strike demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
Introduced in 1958 the AFSPA grants the Indian military special powers throughout North-East India to:
- Arrest citizens and enter their property without warrant;
- Shoot and kill anyone on mere ‘suspicion’;
- Enjoy immunity against legal action.
Under the cover of the Act the Indian armed forces have indulged in killing, torture, enforced disappearances and rape, bringing great shame to India and much misery to the people of Manipur. According to the government appointed Justice Jeevan Reddy Commission ‘the Act has become a symbol of oppression, an object of hate and an instrument of discrimination and high-handedness.’ The United Nations Committee on Racial Discrimination has urged the Indian government to repeal the law.
On 2 November, 2000 Irom Sharmila Chanu, a Manipuri poet decided to go on a hunger strike after the Indian Army massacred ten civilians in Malom, Manipur. On 6 November 2000 she was arrested by the police and charged with attempt to commit suicide under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code. Her health deteriorated gradually and she did not accept even a single drop of water.
On 21 November 2000 a plastic tube was inserted into her nose and liquid nutrient was inserted into her body. She has been surviving on this liquid diet and in solitary confinement as a high security prisoner for the last nearly ten years. She is routinely released every year only to be re-arrested again. This ritual has been going on for a decade now.
In solidarity with her local civil society, particularly the women, have been on a relay hunger strike since December 10, 2008. On the occasion of her struggle entering the tenth year, they are poised to celebrate her resilience as a “Festival of Hope, Justice and Peace”. We the following organisations are convinced that Sharmila’s struggle is not just to defend the human rights in Manipur, but in reality it is reshaping the very foundations of democracy in India. Therefore, it is important that all those who defend justice, peace and democracy to support her struggle. Hence, we wish to celebrate Sharmila’s courage and resilience as her struggle enters the 10th year from 2 to 6 November 2009 . We call upon all people’s movements, women’s organisations and human rights forums to initiate the following actions:
- Protest or symbolic hunger fast in support of Sharmila’s demand to repeal AFSPA on November 2nd or November 6th.
- Protest in front of Indian embassies all over the world.
- Organise students in schools and colleges to write poems in support of Sharmila’s demands. These can be publicised through Manipurfreedom.org
- Organise Human Rights Film Festivals in support of Sharmila Irom from November 2nd to November 6. A package of films will be available through INSAF, insafdelhi@gmail.com phone: 011-65663958
- Highlight all cases of human rights violations in Manipur and the North-East India
- Popularise the poster for action available at manipurfreedom.org from October 15th onwards (the poster can be freely used to be printed and circulated according to your local needs.)
- Write letters to Chief Minister of Manipur and Prime minister of India with copies to solidarity@manipurfreedom.org and hramanipur@gmail.com
- Organise public meetings in support of Sharmila Irom’s demand to repeal AFSPA.
- Organise book reading sessions / interaction / discussion / talks with the latest book on Sharmila by Deepti Priya Mehrotra called `Burning Bright’ (published by Penguin Books). Priya Mehrotra can be contacted at: 9711793492, or 011-26011078
- Any other action you may think appropriate to express solidarity with the tenth year of struggle by Sharmila Irom.
Please inform details about your actions with photographs to solidarity@manipurfreedom.org so that a wider section of people can be informed.
Please circulate this appeal to all your friends so that a strong campaign can be initiated to generate maximum pressure to repeal AFSPA.
We do hope that you will do everything within your means to make this campaign successful.
